Hi, I am a solar panel & battery installer in Perth & Peel area in western australia approved by CEC, NETCC, NECA. I help homeowners and small businesses choose, install and look after solar panel and battery systems that suit the WA climate and the way they actually use power.
Here are some genuine tips I share with every customer:
1. Size your system on your real usage. Pull 12 months of bills and look at your daily kWh, not just the dollar figure. Most Perth homes do well with 6.6 kW to 10 kW, but a pool, ducted air-con or an EV changes the picture.
2. Use your power while the sun is up. Run the dishwasher, washing machine, dryer and pool pump between 10 am and 3 pm. Every kWh you use yourself is worth far more than the feed-in credit you get for exporting it.
3. Face and tilt matter. North-facing panels give the best all-day output in Perth, but east and west splits are great for morning and late-afternoon loads. Avoid shade from trees, chimneys and neighbouring buildings, because even partial shade on one panel can drag down a whole string unless you use optimisers or micro-inverters.
4. Keep panels clean. Perth gets long dry summers with dust, salt near the coast and bird droppings. A gentle hose-down early in the morning a few times a year keeps output up. Never use high-pressure washers or harsh chemicals.
5. Watch your inverter app. Check your daily generation once a month and compare it with the same month last year. A sudden drop usually means shading, dirt, a tripped isolator or an inverter fault, and catching it early saves money.
6. Think about a battery when the numbers work. A home battery stores your midday surplus for the evening peak. It makes most sense if you export a lot during the day and use a lot at night. Check current WA rebates and feed-in rules before you buy.
7. Choose quality and a local installer. Tier 1 panels, a reputable inverter brand and a CEC accredited installer who will still be around for warranty claims are worth more than the cheapest quote.
8. Get your system serviced. A safety and performance check every few years covers isolators, cabling, roof penetrations and inverter health.
